Recent Advances in Nanofabrication Techniques and Applications

by Bo Cui

Recent Advances in Nanofabrication Techniques and Applications by Bo Cui

Nanotechnology has experienced a rapid growth in the past decade, largely owing to the rapid advances in nanofabrication techniques employed to fabricate nano-devices. Nanofabrication can be divided into two categories: ‘bottom up’ approach using chemical synthesis or self assembly, and ‘top down’ approach using nanolithography, thin film deposition and etching techniques. Both topics are covered, though with a focus on the second category. This book contains twenty nine chapters and aims to provide the fundamentals and recent advances of nanofabrication techniques, as well as its device applications. Most chapters focus on in-depth studies of a particular research field, and are thus targeted for researchers, though some chapters focus on the basics of lithographic techniques accessible for upper year undergraduate students. Divided into five parts, this book covers electron beam, focused ion beam, nanoimprint, deep and extreme UV, X-ray, scanning probe, interference, two-photon, and nanosphere lithography.

Augmented Reality – Some Emerging Application Areas

by Andrew Yeh Ching Nee

Augmented Reality - Some Emerging Application Areas by Andrew Yeh Ching Nee

Augmented Reality (AR) is a natural development from virtual reality (VR), which was developed several decades earlier. AR complements VR in many ways. Due to the advantages of the user being able to see both the real and virtual objects simultaneously, AR is far more intuitive, but it’s not completely detached from human factors and other restrictions. AR doesn’t consume as much time and effort in the applications because it’s not required to construct the entire virtual scene and the environment. In this book, several new and emerging application areas of AR are presented and divided into three sections. The first section contains applications in outdoor and mobile AR, such as construction, restoration, security and surveillance. The second section deals with AR in medical, biological, and human bodies. The third and final section contains a number of new and useful applications in daily living and learning.

MATLAB – A Ubiquitous Tool for the Practical Engineer

by Clara M. Ionescu

MATLAB - A Ubiquitous Tool for the Practical Engineer by Clara M. Ionescu

A well-known statement says that the PID controller is the ‘bread and butter’ of the control engineer. This is indeed true, from a scientific standpoint. However, nowadays, in the era of computer science, when the paper and pencil have been replaced by the keyboard and the display of computers, one may equally say that MATLAB is the ‘bread’ in the above statement. MATLAB has became a de facto tool for the modern system engineer. This book is written for both engineering students, as well as for practicing engineers. The wide range of applications in which MATLAB is the working framework, shows that it is a powerful, comprehensive and easy-to-use environment for performing technical computations. The book includes various excellent applications in which MATLAB is employed: from pure algebraic computations to data acquisition in real-life experiments, from control strategies to image processing algorithms, from graphical user interface design for educational purposes to Simulink embedded systems.

Recent Advances in Document Recognition and Understanding by Minoru Mori

In the field of document recognition and understanding, whereas scanned paper documents were previously the only recognition target, various new media such as camera-captured documents, videos, and natural scene images have recently started to attract attention because of the growth of the Internet/WWW and the rapid adoption of low-priced digital cameras/videos. The keys to the breakthrough include character detection from complex backgrounds, discrimination of characters from non-characters, modern or ancient unique font recognition, fast retrieval technique from large-scaled scanned documents, multi-lingual OCR, and unconstrained handwriting recognition. This book aims to present recent advances, applications, and new ideas that are relevant to document recognition and understanding, from technical topics such as image processing, feature extraction or classification, to new applications like camera-based recognition or character-based natural scene analysis. Image Processing in Optical Coherence Tomography by Robert Koprowski and Zygmunt Wrobel

Image Processing in Optical Coherence Tomography

by Robert Koprowski and Zygmunt Wrobel

The book you have in your hands is a summary of research carried out at the Department of Computer Biomedical Systems, Institute of Computer Science, University of Silesia in Katowice in cooperation with the team of Prof. Edward Wylegala, D.Sc., M.D. This cooperation resulted in the creation of methods for ophthalmologists support in OCT images automated analysis. These methods, like the application developed on their basis, are used during routine examinations carried out in hospital.

The monograph comprises proposals of new and also of known algorithms, modified by authors, for image analysis and processing, presented on the basis of example of Matlab environment with Image Processing tools. The results are not only obtained fully automatically, but also repeatable, providing doctors with quantitative information on the degree of pathology occurring in the patient. In this case the anterior and posterior eye segment is analysed, e.g. the measurement of the filtration angle or individual layers thickness.

To introduce the Readers to subtleties related to the implementation of selected fragments of algorithms, the notation of some of them in the Matlab environment has been given. The presented source code is shown only in the form of example of implementable selected algorithm. In no way we impose here the method of resolution on the Reader and we only provide the confirmation of a possibility of its practical implementation.

The book is addressed both to ophthalmologists willing to expand their knowledge in the field of automated eye measurements and also primarily to IT specialists, Ph.D. students and students involved in the development of applications designed for automation of measurements for the needs of medicine.

This book is available free of charge in an electronic version. The authors agree to disseminate, duplicate and use in any way free of charge this book. A commercial use of algorithms and images presented is protected by law.

The authors thank cordially Prof. Edward Wylegala, D.Sc., M.D. and his team for the provided images and valuable guidance and consultations.

I’ve self-published my work, now what?   no comments

I've self-published my work, now what?

Without a good marketing plan, all your writing will be for nothing.

This is a guest post by Jessica Wiener of Print360.com

You’ve climbed the self-publishing mountain and now you can kick back and take it easy, right? If only it were that easy. Now, the hard work begins: marketing your work. Chances are you took advantage of a good commercial printing outfit and you have a pile of books to move. Without a good marketing plan, all your writing will be for nothing.

Here are five marketing steps to help you along:

1. Social Media – Establishing a social media presence is one of the fastest ways to build momentum for marketing. Social media such as Twitter and Facebook allow you to start building a loyal fan base. Setting up accounts is free and takes very little time. Managed correctly, they are powerful additions to a successful marketing campaign.

2. Author Platform – A good author platform will serve as the basis for a good deal of your marketing efforts. An author platform is a website that will feature your self-published work. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you desire. The good news is that there are lots of ways to establish your platform and many of these are free. Consider using a WordPress.com site. They are free and you have control over every aspect of the site including layout, design elements and content.

3. Go Local – The local aspect of marketing is often overlooked by self-published folks. Most communities have independent bookstores who love to promote local talent. Contact them about setting up a display or maybe even a book signing. If your book applies to a specific trade or business, contact professional organizations and request a speaking engagement at one of their luncheons or conferences.

4. Interview – The key to selling your work is to get the word out. One of the best ways to do this is through a series of interviews in a variety of venues. Local talk radio stations often have these kinds of segments. Contact them and find out what needs to be done in each particular case. There are also a number of venues on the web including sites like Blog Talk Radio. The advantage here is that it is easy to mesh these interviews with what you have going on at your author platform and they are easy to promote through your social media circles.

5. Leverage Every Opportunity – The most successful self-publishing types seize every opportunity to get their name and their work out where folks can see them. Change your email signature to include a link to your author platform. Join forums that pertain to your work and again, include links to your work in your standard forum signature.

Marketing your self-published work may be challenging but it can be very rewarding. It is normal to have reservations about self promotion. In time you will feel better about doing it and you may find it to be one of the most gratifying experiences of your life.

A Decade of the DMCA   no comments

A Decade of the DMCA by Marcia K. Wilbur

A Decade of the DMCA

by Marcia K. Wilbur

In 1998, the DMCA was passed into law. Since that time, many cases emerged. Background information relevant to copyright law and some cases are included. Over the past decade, some DMCA related protests were held. This book chronicles some of these events. In many cases in the past decade fair use was little or no consideration.

In some of the more recent cases, fair use has been a consideration, which is somewhat of a relief to those who wish to create parodies and conduct research. However, there is no guarantee that any future cases that clearly fall under fair use will be seen as such by the courts. The examples in the book are not my DMCA story, but the story of Americans (and others) impacted by the DMCA. These are their stories, their experiences and some of their suggestions.
